IREENA KOLYANA Although she appears mild, she has a strong will, and she aids the party as best she can in saving herself. She doesn’t remember her early past. She doesn’t know how she came to Barovia or where she came from. Moreover, her encounters with Strahd are fuzzy memories, thanks to his vampiric charm, but she can recall clearly the blazing hunger in his eyes. — CURSE OF STRAHD, 2016 Ireena is a sweet but troubled woman. Although she may at first appear mild, she has a strong will and a good arm. By no means a hapless victim, she will aid the party as best she can in saving herself. Ireena does not remember her early past. She does not know how she came to Barovia nor where she came from. Ireena will inform the party that each night, wolves and other, terrible creatures attack the house. The Burgomaster's heart could not stand the constant assault and he died a natural death. — RAVENLOFT, 1983 PERSONALITY Born and raised in the shadow of Castle Ravenloft, Ireena has known fear as a constant companion, though she wears it like armor rather than chains. She is neither the helpless maiden her circumstances might suggest, nor the hardened warrior some might wish her to be. Instead, she walks a complex middle path — a woman who has learned to survive in a land where survival itself is an act of defiance. In a realm where idealism died centuries ago, she stands as one of the few truly good souls, a rare point of light in Barovia's perpetual darkness. Despite the constant threat looming over her life, Ireena maintains a fierce independence of spirit. Her natural red hair, now dyed a careful black-auburn, speaks to both her heritage and her determination to forge her own identity. This isn't mere vanity, it's survival. Village elders whisper that red hair is a harbinger of misfortune, pointing to the tragic fates of Tatyana's previous incarnations. So Ireena maintains her disguise methodically, though the dye requires constant maintenance to prevent her true colors from showing through. She may be the latest vessel for Tatyana's soul, but she steadfastly refuses to be defined by this cosmic twist of fate. Her identity is her own, shaped by her loving relationship with her adoptive family (a secret known to very few), particularly her brother Ismark, and by her determination to forge her own path in a realm where choice is often an illusion. As the daughter of Burgomaster Kolyan Indirovich, now deceased, and sister to the current Burgomaster, by extension she also carries the weight of being part of one of only three noble families in the valley. The tragedy of Ireena's situation has not broken her capacity for compassion. If anything, her own experiences have deepened her empathy for others trapped within Barovia's borders. She carries herself with a quiet dignity that commands respect rather than demanding it, and those who know her speak of her kindness as much as her courage. Where others might let fear turn them bitter or paranoid, Ireena channels it into empathy, quick to comfort frightened children or aid those in need. Yet beneath this composed exterior lies a deep well of determination and a streak of stubbornness that would put a mule to shame. Once Ireena plants her feet on an issue, moving her becomes nearly impossible. This trait manifests alongside a surprising sense of humor — a rarity among the dour Barovians — and a genuine curiosity about the world around her. Her apparent wide-eyed innocence masks a cunning mind, one that understands all too well the dark realities of her homeland. Strahd terrifies her, plain and simple. She'd be a fool not to be afraid of he who is ancient, of he who is the land, but Ireena refuses to let that fear paralyze her. Instead, it drives her forward, though she's haunted by the belief that surrendering to become his vampire bride might have saved her father's life. She fights her own battles and faces her destiny on her own terms. Currently, she clings to the hope that if she can just disappear effectively enough, Strahd might eventually lose interest, unaware that such a thing is impossible. The fact that she bears some unconscious connection to Tatyana's abilities and knowledge only adds another layer to her complexity, rather than defining her. Ireena refuses to be a mere echo of Tatyana, a prize to be won, or a victim to be saved. SPECIAL ABILITIES Ireena has the soul of Tatyana Federovna giving her access to unconscious abilities and knowledge, including that she seems to know her way around Castle Ravenloft. This isn't a conscious awareness, but if she wants to go somewhere in the castle, she can find her way there without fail. She is not, however, aware of changes made since Tatyana's death. She will also feel nostalgic around the Sunsword, feeling like she recognizes the hilt. Seeing the painting of Tatyana in Strahd's study may trigger a memory of sitting for that painting. Seeing the dining room and rotted, stale cake in Ravenloft may trigger a flashbulb of herself in a wedding dress, with the room richly decorated, and the cake fresh. Ireena is also drawn to strong warrior types and will naturally gravitate towards those individual, especially if she is nervous. She will recognize Sergei, if she sees him in the crypts, and will unlock fragmentary memories of him; however, she continues to be Ireena, retains her personality, and must make her own decisions.
